Snowboarding is similar to skiing, but looks more like surfing and skateboarding since the riders control the board in a stance used by surfers and skateboarders. Snowboarders enjoy carving deep powder and big aerial tricks, and in many ski resorts outnumber the skiers on the mountain. A snowboard culture has evolved as well, appealing to young people as an alternative to the skiing image. Because the width of the snowboard works so well in powder snow, many snowboarders venture off-piste or into the backcountry to find untracked virgin snow. This can be dangerous in avalanche territory.
